And that's the last page of our inaugural 6-page update. Welcome to the League of Fonts, you guys! I'm so happy you're here, and I hope you'll stick around to read more of my wacky new webcomic about fonts. You can go to the cast page at the top of this site to learn a little bit more about Times New Roman and Futura. (Don't worry, this is the only time you'll ever have to see TNR shirtless. Which is good, because drawing that ONCE was quite enough for me, thank you).
From now on, each update will be only 1 page long. I wish I could post one of these monster 6 page updates every week, but these things take forever to draw, you guys. I'd have to draw in my sleep to be able to post so frequently! Or I could, you know, make my pages less complicated. But I'm a perfectionist, sooooo... that's probably not happening.
So anyway, next week on The League of Fonts: a page that is, actually, not about fonts at all. Oops. Tune in on Wednesday!
I absolutely love this comic so far - you've developed a simply stunning concept, and I can't wait to see more of it! It feels good to look at a website that's so nicely done. The art and the colors are exquisite, the details are drawn to near perfection, and your style is so unique - I can safely say that I haven't seen one quite like it! (It took me a while to read the 6 pages, actually, because the art itself is so breathtaking.)
Also, I've been reading your Chapel comic for a while now, and have been checking in periodically to see if you updated. I'm thrilled about this new series, and I'm so glad you're better so you can share your amazing personality and your talents with us!
Oh my gosh, thank you so much! I really carefully designed all the aspects of the website myself, so I'm really glad it makes a nice clean space for you to read my comic in. And beyond the website, your praise of my art means SO much to me, especially that you said I have a unique style! I don't really consider myself to have a style, beyond the way I do colors and how obsessive I am about details, so honestly...this really makes my day to read!
Thank you so much for your kind words. And I'm super happy you crossed over from Chapel and are still enjoying my new work!! :)
Having read many, many, many(!) graphic novels, manga, web comics and such, not many things catch my eye immediately and make me want more. Usually, I have to get a good 10 or so pages in before the spark of interest fires. Your work is one of those that had me from the first drawn line. From the premise to the characters, this is something that has an amazing amount of potential, and I can't wait to see what happens.
Oh my goodness - this is such a WONDERFUL compliment, this really made my day to read! I've really worked hard to try and make this comic as good as I can, and it makes me so happy to think I might've accomplished that in some small way. I'm so honored it's resonated with you so far, and I hope you'll enjoy what happens next! Thank you so much for your lovely comment :)
this is so incredible, emma! i absolutely adore this idea and i can't even imagine how you came up with it! you're awesome, as always! p.s.: i'm so, so happy you're feeling better. sending so much love your way!
Aaaah thank you SO MUCH! I'm so, so happy that some of the original Chapel readers are crossing over to read League, I hope you'll continue enjoying it too! And I'm feeling way better, especially now that I can have comics online for people to enjoy again! :)
Sorry about the double post. I just realized Times New Roman is my go-to font for journal entries and most writing in general. I just realized that. Will font SIZE actually be dealt with too?
No worries about double commenting, many people used to do it on Chapel because they knew my policy of responding to every single comment! ;)
Font size won't be dealt with, because each font is drawn at a standard size and then just scaled up and down for people on computers. The only element of font size that is important in the story is the differing "heights" of various fonts - some have letterforms that are much taller, while others are more squat. This is, you'll see, reflected somewhat in their personifications.
What about other elements such as italicizing and bold. Will that play any part? This whole idea of living fonts is just so neat. There's so much you can do with it. Can't wait to see where it goes.
Wonderful, unique, creative, and original. I LOVE this. Thanks so much for sharing your amazing work. I have to figure out how to subscribe to this page.
If you click on the "Links" page up ahead, there's an RSS feed you can subscribe to! I was under the impression nobody used RSS anymore, but various people requested it. I'll also be posting a reminder on Facebook each time there is a new update, so you can be reminded there if that works!
Okay, this Prologue compelled me to check out some info on the fonts shown and I was pleased to see that in the Real World, Futura does predate Times New Roman, if only by 4 years (1927 vs. 1931). With a name like Futura, it's just a little surprising it was almost 90 years old, but hey, they looked to the future back then too.
Now, if you haven't filled out the entire Cast of Characters, may I suggest a couple of "my favorites that aren't everybody else's favorites": the big blocky sans Eurostile, the pseudo-monocase of mary-tyler-moore fame Peignot and (if the League needs a librarian, the perfect candidate) Bookman (but remember, there's a serious difference between the Microsoft-supported Bookman Old Style and the 1970s' ubiquitously decorative Bookman Swash). You can tell I'm going to be following this closely and enjoying every page.
Yes! I was very careful to make sure that the font shown in this intro scene predated TNR, which is one of the reasons I picked Futura. (If you look at the "Cast" page up above, you can see that I've listed the creation dates for each character that has been introduced so far).
I've already scripted the entire run of this comic - the script is over 200 pages right now - so I already know who the main cast of characters are! Most of the main characters are more popular fonts simply because I wanted viewers to be able to recognize them more easily, but there's a big cast of side characters that use less popular fonts! Bookman is already one of those, actually, but I'll keep Peignot and Eurostile in mind for smaller background characters! I love the idea of Peignot being a librarian, actually, so if she crops up one day it'll be in that capacity for sure!
I'm so happy to hear you've been enjoying this so far, and that you seemingly get as much enjoyment from geeking out over fonts as I do. :)
Oh, I've just realized I misread your comment completely - you were suggesting Bookman be the librarian, not Peignot! Which makes much more sense, since that play on words IS really perfect!
Amazinnnngggg!!!! Everything is wonderfully detailed and your commentary is excellent. Also, I'm really digging the cliffs out the window on this page.
Oh my gosh, thank you! I always wonder if people read my commentaries fully...but I hope they do, because I explain a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff in them! And I'm glad you like the cliffs, they were fun to draw.
emma i can't believe it oh my god, its all up & running, we get to see your perfect wonderful little storybrain children in all their glory. this is iNCREDIBLE and i am going to be glued to these updates, i cannot wait!! aaaaah

But this is so good! I'm so hyped! Your website is so good and I'm not going to shut up about this ever!
